OPEN LETTER FROM VOLUNTEERS PETER & ANNE

We spent a six month placement at the PASCO school in Ghana, in 2004, on our first ever time volunteering abroad. We were so impressed that we returned for a further two months in 2005, before returning to England. The school, in return were so pleased with our work that they renamed themselves after us - hence the PeterAnne School Complex (PASCO).

WHAT MADE VOLUNTEERING AT PASCO SO SPECIAL?

  • First, Mr. Kenneth Amponfi is a man of integrity and vision who is a pleasure to work with. Having experienced/heard about other schools in Ghana we would say that his honest dedication to both education and the local community is out of the ordinary.
  • Kenneth and his team are open to ideas which are new to traditional African education styles. During our stay teachers received training in lesson planning. Also, the decision was taken to ban corporal punishment in this school. Regular use of the cane is common in most Ghanaian schools.
  • Our time was never wasted and we felt we made a real difference in the education of the children.
  • We were welcomed and well supported by both Kenneth, local people and Ghanaians in general. This is an ideal placement if you have not volunteered abroad before.
  • We gained first hand insight into Ghanaian culture and lifestyle in a rural setting by living and working in the community.
  • We enjoyed the challenge posed when faced by bright, enthusiastic children who want to learn, when you have little in the way of resources other than “chalk and talk”.

We have made a long term commitment to the school and aim to offer further support in 2006.

We feel that volunteers would enjoy living and working in ‘real’ Ghana, teaching at the PeterAnne School Complex as much as we have. The improvement of education and in particular the development of English and IT skills are on the Ghanaians priority list. This is a real opportunity to take an active part in moving an African state forward via the education of its children.
